Three decades in the flooring business teaches you things no product spec sheet can. As a family who has run Camberwell Floorworld since Adam opened the doors in 2001 (and raised our own kids, Harry, Tom and Madeline, alongside a rotating cast of family pets), we’ve lived through pretty much every kind of household chaos a floor can be put through.
Every room asks something different of your floor
The biggest lesson from thirty years of fitting real Melbourne homes is that there’s rarely one perfect flooring product for an entire house. Kitchens deal with spills and dropped crockery. Hallways and entries cop mud, sand and constant foot traffic. Bedrooms need warmth and quiet underfoot. Trying to force one material to do all of that at once is usually where disappointment creeps in.
What actually survives family life
Waterproof hybrid and vinyl plank consistently prove themselves in kitchens, laundries and living areas where spills and pet accidents are a matter of when, not if. Engineered timber holds up beautifully in living and dining zones that see heavy adult traffic but less liquid risk. Wool carpet remains one of the best choices for bedrooms, offering warmth, comfort and a forgiving surface for little feet, and for the inevitable nights spent lying on the floor rather than in bed.
Durability doesn’t mean giving up on style
One thing we’ve learned raising our own family is that “durable” and “beautiful” were never actually in conflict. It just took the flooring industry a while to catch up. Today’s ranges genuinely deliver both, which means family homes don’t have to settle for flooring that only looks good in the display home.
